about
A Queensland artist now residing on the Sunshine Coast.
I was originally from Melbourne where I practiced architecture before moving in 1980 to take up a building and architecture role until moving into art in 2020.
This fulfilled a life long desire to express my creativity in another field, this time as an artist working in acrylics amongst other media.
artist statement
Sketching has always played a significant role in my work as an architect, enabling effective communication of ideas to clients. Through a single drawing, I can convey the visual appearance and overall ambiance of a building’s final form. Upon retiring, I ventured into painting, which added a new dimension to my interpretation and portrayal of ideas and subjects. My focus shifted towards creating artwork that captures coastal lifestyles, local cafes, landscapes, and architectural structures. This contextual approach has been well received and has helped me develop my own artistic style, which I continuously explore and refine.
During my early artistic endeavours, I found great inspiration in the impressionist movement. The ability to breathe life into ordinary scenes through the skilful use of light and shadow fascinated me. Additionally, my admiration for the art produced by early poster artists sparked my interest in
screen-printing several years ago.
Rather than striving for a photographic replica, my aim is to capture the essence of a scene or subject. I seek to convey the emotions, atmosphere, and overall sentiment evoked by a particular place or moment. The beauty and diversity of the natural world, as well as the people and places that form our communities, serve as endless sources of inspiration for my work. I feel fortunate to have received a positive response from the public regarding my portrayal of mid-century coastal beach shacks. It is truly humbling and fulfilling to know that individuals connect with my artwork on a personal level, resonating with their own experiences and memories.
Painting has become an outlet for expressing my creativity and imagination in ways that architecture and construction never could. It also serves as a means of connecting with others, allowing me to share my vision and passion for the world around us.
